Private Dog Training at Home in Houston
Get individual coaching for the skills you want to use with your dog every day. Good Daweg offers private dog training in Houston, with individual lessons and five-, eight-, and twelve-lesson packages. You take part in the work and receive guidance for practicing between appointments.
Our approach combines positive reinforcement with constructive training techniques, with e-collars used when necessary. Discuss the proposed methods and equipment before choosing a program. A paid consultation gives you a place to talk through your dog's situation and the format that suits your household.

Individual Private Dog Training Lessons
An individual appointment is an option when you want focused guidance or a check-in on practice. You can ask about a cue, work on your handling and discuss what happens when you try the exercise yourself. One appointment provides coaching time; whether it is enough depends on the concern, not simply the number of skills on your list.
Five-Lesson Dog Training Package
A five-lesson package provides several appointments in which to learn, practice at home and revisit questions. That opportunity to return can matter when an exercise is clear during a lesson but harder in your usual routine. Discuss your priorities before choosing the package; five sessions should not be treated as a promised completion date for a behavior problem.
Eight-Lesson Dog Training Package
The eight-lesson option provides additional appointments beyond the five-lesson package. Consider it when your goals call for more coaching opportunities, while keeping the amount of practice you can manage in mind. A larger package does not automatically change how appointments are spaced. Discuss scheduling and the work you will do between visits before deciding.
Twelve-Lesson Dog Training Package
Twelve lessons is the largest published private-training package. It gives you more opportunities to work with a trainer, which may be useful when you want continuing guidance across several routines. Review the intended goals and scope before purchasing. The package size alone does not establish an advanced curriculum or guarantee that every concern will be resolved.

Obedience and Behavior Goals for Private Lessons
In shortEveryday obedience and manners, puppy routines too; describe reactivity, guarding or aggression before booking.
Private lessons commonly focus on the obedience and manners that make everyday life with your dog easier: attention to their name, a reliable sit or down, calmer greetings, and loose-leash walking. If you're raising a puppy, that same one-on-one format can also cover puppy training, crate training, and potty training routines.
If what you're seeing is a reaction to other dogs, guarding around food or toys, or aggression, tell us what's happening before you book. Those concerns have their own pages, including reactive dog training, resource guarding training, and aggressive dog training, and we can discuss whether private lessons are the right format or whether a different plan fits better first.
Practicing Dog Training Between Private Lessons
In shortUse a reward your dog wants, keep words consistent and report back specific details.
The time between appointments is where training actually sets in. Our private lessons come with guidance for practicing at home, so you're not left guessing what to work on until the next visit.
Useful practice usually includes:
- A reward your dog actually wants. Food, a toy, or brief play all work if your dog is motivated by it. Notice what gets a real response instead of assuming one reward fits every dog.
- Consistent words and rules. If one person in the house says "off" and another says "down" for the same behavior, your dog has two things to learn instead of one.
- A specific report back. Instead of "the sit didn't work," tell us where you were, what distractions were around, and what your dog actually did. That detail helps the next lesson build on the last one.
You don't need to solve a sticking point on your own before your next appointment. Bringing it back with a clear description is part of how private lessons work.
Private Dog Training or Board & Train?
In shortLessons keep you practicing from the first appointment; a stay asks you to carry the training on afterward.
With private lessons, you're in the room for the training and doing the practice yourself between sessions, using the package sizes above. Our Board & Train programs include a 2 Week Board & Train option, where your dog stays in a home environment for two weeks of daily training, with owner lessons and follow-up included as part of that program.
Neither format removes your part in the outcome. Private lessons ask you to be present and practicing from the first appointment. A training stay asks you to learn how to use the training once your dog comes home, through the owner lessons built into that program. Which one fits depends on how you want to spend your time right now and how much daily involvement you're looking for.

Private Follow-Up Lessons After Board & Train
In shortLessons help training work at your own door and on your routes; check what your package already includes.
Private lessons are also a way to keep working with a trainer after a board-and-train stay ends. A dog who practiced a skill in a training environment still needs to work through your own front door, your visitor routine, and your usual walking route, and that's where a follow-up lesson is useful.
Check your specific board-and-train package before arranging additional appointments. Some packages include refresher lessons, and their number varies. You should know which support is already included and which work would be booked separately. Refresher lessons can also be discussed when you want to revisit skills after a gap in practice.
Private Dog Training for Houston Routines
In shortHouston parks require leashes outside off-leash areas, so bring real outing situations into practice.
Houston's parks require dogs to stay on a leash outside designated off-leash areas, per the city's dog park guidance, and even a fenced dog park's transition corridor calls for a leash on the way in and out. That's worth building into practice, since a recall that works in your yard still needs a leash for most public spaces around the city.
For an owner doing the handling, an outing involves more than a walking cue. You may need to collect a dropped item, open a gate or wait while another person passes. Bring those practical situations into the training conversation. You can discuss the skills you need without assuming a busy dog park is the right place to start or a promised lesson location.
We also offer day training and online dog training if a drop-off session or virtual coaching fits your schedule better than an in-person private lesson. We serve Houston and the surrounding area, including The Heights, The Woodlands, Katy, and Spring.
Private-Training FAQs
Are private dog training lessons worth it?
Private lessons are worth it if you want individual coaching you can practice yourself between visits, rather than a stay that shifts the daily work off your schedule. Their value depends on the practice you do outside the lesson as much as the lesson itself. If you're not sure this is the right format, a consultation is a good place to talk through your dog's situation before choosing a package.
How many private training lessons will my dog need?
The starting point, difficulty of the concern and practice you can maintain all matter. Counting goals alone isn't enough: one persistent behavior can require more work than several familiar cues. Describe your priorities and any previous training, then discuss whether to begin with an individual lesson or a package. You do not need to choose the largest package before that conversation.
Should I choose private lessons or send my dog for training?
That depends on how you want to be involved and how much daily time you have for practice right now. Private lessons keep you in the room from the first appointment, working alongside your dog. Our 2 Week Board & Train keeps your dog with us for daily training over two weeks, with owner lessons included so you know how to continue at home. Either way, your involvement after training ends is part of keeping the results.
